Unwed Mothers consortium
Unwed Mothers (single Parents) is the peculiarity of Wayanad. Most of them are Tribals and there are Non-tribals also in the group. Economic distress, tempting, cheating and sexual exploitation of adolescent girls has resulted in the presence of the increased number of the single parents. The youngest one is 13 years old, having one child. Some of the unwed mothers later turned as sex workers since there is absolutely no income for the survival. The mothers are isolated both from their family as well as from the community. The culprits usually escape with out much damage through their economic and political power. Majority of them are under poverty, malnourishment and depression. HiLDA is trying our level best to bring back them to the normal life through income generating activities, organizing occasional get together, extending emotional support.
